Record of the week: Tito Ramirez - El Prince

It’s 1 May, a public holiday in Germany, so we’re turning our attention to something very special: Tito Ramírez.

„El Prince“ draws from a rich musical cornucopia. Psychedelia, Latin soul, Garage, Mambo, Boogaloo, R&B, Gospel and much more, always with a 60s flavour and extremely groovy. I first became aware of the dance hit „Yadda-Haddabaddo“ and then treated myself to the album on vinyl, which was a really good investment. The album was released in 2023, but it’s still readily available on vinyl. I can’t wait to play a track or two in a DJ set.🔥

Record of the week: Doechii - Alligator bites never heal

Here’s a little proof that I’m not an old fart who only listens to the music of the last century (and only spins this tunes on vinyl as a DJ). Admittedly: I find most of the music in the current charts absolutely arbitrary, at best meaningless, at worst annoying.

But this mixtape album by Rapper Doechii is terrific, rightly landed in many annual best lists in 2024 and earned her a Grammy for „Best Rap Album“. In Germany, the album has been in the album charts for several weeks. This is Rap (especially on the A-side) with the best old-school influences. I treated myself to the limited edition version in gold vinyl. And if that’s not enough, you should check out her Tiny Desk concert on YouTube.

My favourites: "Bullfrog", "Boiled peanuts", "Denial is a river", "Catfish" and "Death roll".

Record of the week: Mitsune - Hazama

A fusion of traditional Japanese music, psychedelic sounds, driving beats and extravagant visuals: This is the band Mitsune from Berlin. The sound is characterised by the shamisen, a Japanese stringed instrument. Other traditional instruments, bass and percussion are also used. The result is a wild mix, exciting and unusual and far from any musical uniformity. Hazama is their second album, was released in 2022 and is sadly the only one available on vinyl. If you don’t know it yet, you should definitely give it a listen!

Record of the week: El León Pardo - Viaje Sideral

Musically, our trip to Colombia a few years ago has left its mark on me. And so I am always interested in musicians from this region who fuse their folklore with modern electronic music. Jorge Emilio Pardo Vásquez aka El León Pardo also comes from there, has been playing many wind instruments since his youth, from the traditional kuisi flute to the trumpet, and has now recorded his second album. "Viaje Sideral" or "Space voyage" glides through the cosmos, somewhere between downtempo and hypnotic beats, between wind instruments, synthesizers and deep basses, between yesterday and tomorrow. Another exciting record from @ayarecords, part of the ZZK label. And finally there’s this wonderful picture disc with a starry sky. Highly recommended.

And another best-of double album for the weekend, this time from Creedence Clearwater Revival. Solid Southern Rock or Blues Rock, at once progressive psychedelic and anachronistically bluesy for the late sixties and early seventies.

Admittedly, „Proud Mary“ or „Bad Moon Rising“ are absolutely overplayed numbers that pretty much every cover band can scrape down. But „Fortunate son“, „Up around the bend“ or „Susie Q“ are still cool tracks.

Record of the week: Carpenters - The singles 1969-1973

It’s time for a few best-of albums in the record cabinet. No collector’s items, no wacky, innovative sounds, but solid essentials. And it starts with one of my „musical weak points“.

I admit it: I really, really love the music of the Carpenters. Fluffy, sweet Pop-Country songs that are perfectly produced. And then there is the incomparable voice of Karen Carpenter. With a distinctive three-octave contralto range, she was praised by her peers for her vocal skills. But she was not only a gifted singer but also a great and passionate drummer. Tragically she died far too early at the age of 32 as a result of anorexia. Actually a very sad story, about which there is also a good documentary that is worth watching („Too young to die“). What remains are these evergreens and her inimitable singing. R.I.P. Karen 🙏🏼

Record of the week: Moka Efti Orchestra - Erstausgabe

As the title suggests, „Erstausgabe“ is the debut album by the German orchestra led by composers Nikko Weidemann and Mario Kamien and arranger and bandleader Sebastian Borkowski. Known from the series "Babylon Berlin" and the epic track "Zu Asche, zu Staub", the orchestra brings more than just the jazz of the 1920s here. As well as Charleston, it also sounds to me like Bertholt Brecht & Kurt Weill, Nick Cave or the musical background of Tom Waits (without his voice, of course). A truly exciting work of art.

It’s time for Team 70!

There are plenty of 80s parties, the 90s and 2000s are played up and down and current hits can be found in almost every club. It’s a shame that the 70s are often neglected. Yet this decade had such great music: Pop, Glam Rock, Funk and of course DISCO!

But that has now come to an end! Today there’s FRIDAY NIGHT FEVER at the @schlosskellerdarmstadt and I have the honor to spin some vinyl for this occasion. You can look forward to dance to the songs by ABBA, the Bee Gees, the Gibson Brothers, Amanda Lear and many more. Quickly put on your bell bottoms, floral dresses or platform shoes and let’s go. After all, the dress code is "Discoqueen"! I'm looking forward to see you there!

Record of the week: B.T. Express - Non-Stop

Non-Stop is the second album by Funk/Soul band B.T. Express (and one of their best). Released in July 1975, the album reached number one on the Billboard R&B albums chart in the US.

This is funky stuff that follows the Disco trend of the 70s. Extremely danceable tracks that bring life to the party ("Peace pipe", "Give it what you got", "You got it - I want it").

Towards the end of the 70s, the band’s success waned until they finally disbanded in 1981.

Record of the week: Various - Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt

This little 12“ EP brings back childhood memories (for the older ones among us). At least for me…

As early as 1972, WDR produced the series based on the children’s book by Boy Lornsen about the boy Tobbi (who is also an inventor), the robot Robbi and the Fliewatüüt, which can fly, swim and drive. The program was often repeated in the 70s and of course I also watched it. It was a (for the time super modern) mixture of puppetry, blue screen shots, live action and aerial shots.

The title melody by German jazz musician, arranger and composer Ingfried Hoffmann is extremely funky. And the Frank Popp Ensemble’s version adds another good dose of funk. There is also a version of Big Boss Man, the original of course, and another track reworked by Hyboid. And the journey into the past is complete (if that’s not enough, you can also get the album with the complete film music).

Let’s stay a while with German singers: Katja Ebstein, real name Karin Ilse Überall, released her first long-playing record „Katja“ in 1969, which was recommended by the youth magazine Twen. The gatefold cover is adorned with a chic graphic (probably very modern for 1969) and the music is somewhere between Chanson, Pop, Beat and Schlager. I bought the record mainly because of the great „Lila Luftballon“, a catchy Latin pop track, and the psychedelic cover version of the Beatles song „A hard day’s night“.

By the way, in 2024 Katja Ebstein took part in the song „Nicht mit uns!“ for democracy and against the AfD. Respect.

Record of the week: Hildegard Knef - Knef

Ella Fitzgerald described Hildegard Knef as the „best singer without a voice“. And there may be something to it…

This is her album from 1970 simply called "Knef", re-released on colored vinyl. A great record, a piece of general musical education.

Hildegard Frieda Albertine Knef was a German actress, singer and author, a charismatic, fascinating and intelligent artist. The lyrics of all the songs on this album were written by her, but musically her arranger and composer Hans Hammerschmid has tried something new here compared to the previous albums. From the psychedelic Beat in „Wieviel Menschen waren glücklich, dass du gelebt?“ and „Im 80. Stockwerk“, the epic „Friedenskampf und Schadenfreude“ to the waltz „Schwertfisch“ and the folkloristic Chanson „Ich brauch‘ Tapetenwechsel“, this is an versatile album, a piece of contemporary musical history with intelligent lyrics. Speaking of contemporary history: I can recommend her autobiography „Der geschenkte Gaul“ to everyone. Her memories of National Socialism and the war are well worth reading and a warning to us all.
