Record of the week: Jessica Williams - Queen of Fo Record of the week: Jessica Williams - Queen of Fools

I was never particularly interested in Disco and Hi-NRG in the past. Sure, "High Energy" by Evelyn Thomas is a classic that’s a must at any 80s party, and "You make me feel (mighty real)" by Sylvester is an absolute banger. But if you dig a bit deeper, you can find plenty of tracks from these genres that feature lovely songwriting and sound timeless. Jessica Williams’ album was released in 1979 and sounds like 70s disco, but also has a distinctly 80s feel to it. And the title track is really brilliant. There’s very little information about the artist online, but it seems she’s still making music today and even released a new album last year.

The covers of Disco records from the 70s are indee The covers of Disco records from the 70s are indeed often questionable, or at least sexually suggestive, if I may put it that way.

The 1977 album by the THP Orchestra, a Canadian Disco band, is no exception. However, the 15-minute title track and the B-side both deliver some seriously funky Disco beats. Cool stuff!

Record of the week: Stargard - Changing of the Gar Record of the week: Stargard - Changing of the Gard

"Changing of the Gard" is Stargard’s third studio album, released in 1979. The album was produced by Verdine White from the band Earth, Wind & Fire and Robert Wright. "Wear it out" was released as a single and reached number 4 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart (and will certainly be making its way onto my DJ playlist soon when it’s time for some 70s Disco action again).

Record of the week: Patrice Rushen - Pizzazz Pat Record of the week: Patrice Rushen - Pizzazz

Patrice Rushen is a multi-talented musician: Singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, producer and musical director. As well as Soul, R&B, Jazz and Disco, she has written the music for various television films and series and composed several orchestral works. "Pizzazz" is her fifth album, released in 1979, and, in keeping with the spirit of the times, much (though not all) of it revolves around disco. "Let the music take me" and "Haven’t you heard" are perfect Disco tracks, and this lovely reissue also includes the 12-inch versions. Disco lover, what more could you want…

Record of the week: Karen Young - Hot Shot After Record of the week: Karen Young - Hot Shot

After a brief interlude, we continue with a deep dive into the Disco record collection. Although Karen Young’s discography is relatively small, it includes "Hot Shot" – a true disco anthem that made her an overnight star, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart and number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track also made it into the charts in the United Kingdom and Germany. "Bring on the Boys" was also released as a single and, in my opinion, is an even bigger dancefloor smash hit. Sadly, poor Karen passed away far too young in 1991.

Record of the week: Macho - I'm a man Perfect fo Record of the week: Macho - I'm a man

Perfect for the weather: A sweaty, sultry Disco album from 1978. Jacques Fred Petrus and Mauro Malavasi were the masterminds behind many acts featuring a mix of Disco, R&B and Eurodisco. And Macho was their first project.

The whole album consists of just three songs, albeit in extended versions. First up is their version of "I’m a man" written by Steve Winwood. The track reached number 6 on Billboard Magazine’s Disco chart in October 1978. I find “Because There’s Music in the Air” much more interesting, though – also over ten minutes long, with quite extroverted vocals and a hypnotic sequencer as its foundation. A super-cool track for 70s Disco dancing. 🔥

A cool daytime drinking event in a cool venue: tha A cool daytime drinking event in a cool venue: that was @thriftedntipsy.ffm at the @vintage.factory1977. It was a pleasure to support the @sae.institute.germany students with their project and spin three hours of music on vinyl. It was the debut for my Disco and Proto-House vinyl collection, in the spirit of the legendary "Studio 54". And isn’t it brilliant that large-format pictures of that club are hanging in the Vintage Factory? Cheers to everyone who was there! See ya…

PS: Tone Loc or other old-school HipHop was a specific request from a young man, and it was granted in the end (though, of course, it had nothing to do with Disco).

Record of the week: Various - Studio 54 (Music ins Record of the week: Various - Studio 54 (Music inspired by iconic '70 New York Club "Studio 54")

This compilation was released in 2024 on the Italian label Use Vinyl Records. The double album features a beautiful glittery cover and transparent gold vinyl – an opulent presentation that perfectly matches the theme: Studio 54 in New York, one of the most famous, if not the most famous, nightclubs in the world, and the music played there. And so here you’ll find extended versions of dancefloor favourites, including tracks by the Michael Zager Band, Cuba Gooding and Gloria Gaynor (the maxi single is actually a 1970s invention and not, as I’d thought for a long time, from the 1980s). The heyday of Disco music coincided precisely with the brief period during which Studio 54 existed. And that’s also where you’ll find the roots of modern electronic dance music, such as House. Brilliant!

The 1970s, the decade of cheesy album covers. The The 1970s, the decade of cheesy album covers. The second album by the vocal trio Stargard is no exception (Stargard sounds a bit like a brand of hairspray).

Musically, however, with its blend of Soul, Funk and Disco, it’s undoubtedly a lovely record.

Record of the week: Sweet Cream - Sweet Cream & Ot Record of the week: Sweet Cream - Sweet Cream & Other Delights

The Ridgeway Sisters present yet another take on Herb Alpert's legendary "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" cover with this magnificent Disco album from 1978. It is the only album by sisters Gloria, Esther and Gracie under the name Sweet Cream, who were frequently employed as session singers. "I don’t know what I’d do (if you ever left me)" is truly a Disco dancefloor smash hit and one of the highlights on this consistently strong album.

Finally, a word on the album cover: “Whipped Cream…” is indeed a piece of pop culture and has since become one of the most parodied album covers in music history (and Pat Cooper’s “Spaghetti Sauce & Other Delights” is my favourite).

Record of the week: Rolling Stones - Foreign tongu Record of the week: Rolling Stones - Foreign tongues

There are some records that I simply have to buy. That goes, of course, for the Rolling Stones’ 25th studio album as well. I’d buy it simply for the sake of completeness, even if Mick Jagger were to spend the entire 45 minutes of the album blowing a comb.

But thankfully that’s not the case, so I’ve ended up with a lovely double album, featuring some really strong tracks (in my opinion "Rough and Twisted", "Mr Charm") and a top-class cover version of an Amy Winehouse song plus a nice T-shirt.

But will it really be the Stones’ final release? Who knows…

Nuevos Rios A new release from the ZZK Records la Nuevos Rios

A new release from the ZZK Records label, a new musical project and a new record on my shelf, which I’m sure will also feature during my DJ sets. The Colombian band Canalón de Timbiquí, featuring singer Nidia Góngora, and Reco Reco from Toulouse are involved in this project, which blends Afro-Colombian sounds with electronic instruments. A generous helping of marimba and percussion, a touch of Reggae, some Tropical Bass influences and plenty of soul result in an album that’s sure to go down a treat on the dancefloor. Highly recommended!

Even if it’s hot outside, we’re still keeping it funky! Tower of Power is one of the longest-running R&B, Soul and Funk bands, and this 1975 album is a real cracker! And what a line-up: Lenny Williams, Chester Thompson and David Garibaldi, to name but a few. If you’re into Jamiroquai’s Acid Jazz from the 90s, you should definitely give this album a listen.

Let’s start with the cover: I love the image with its 70s colours, slightly grainy, plus that brilliant font and a sturdy, thick cardboard sleeve – the sort of thing you don’t see on records anymore.

The music? Ah yes, T-Connection hailed from the Bahamas and cooked up a sizzling mix of Funk and Disco, releasing eight albums before the band split up in 1984 – and this was their debut. I’ll definitely be playing the track "Do What You Wanna Do" at "Friday Night Fever" at the @schlosskellerdarmstadt. So come along!
